作品展にあたって

関口照生は不思議な存在だ。
最近の活動は写真家に留まらず、コメンテーターや政府の諮問委員までも務めた。
交友関係も、文化・芸術・芸能・経済・政治・皇族まであらゆる分野に及んでいる。
一方で若いアーティストや学生たちと過ごす時間も少なくない。
それが、仕事であれ、趣味であれ、全く同じスタンスでコミュニケーションしている。
如何なる人間関係の中でも空気の様に存在し、心地よい微風を吹かせている。

そんな彼の人間味の原点は「旅」にある。
２０代から始まった旅は、６０代半ばを迎えた今も変わらず続いている。
パリ、ロンドン、ニューヨークなどの都会や南のリゾート地へも度々訪れるが、
氷原が続く北極圏、中国の奥地、サハラ砂漠、熱帯雨林など、
キャンプを張って１ヶ月以上に及ぶ過酷な冒険の旅も大好きだ。
そして、最果ての僻地であろうと、異国の都会の雑踏の中であっても、
如何なる環境の中でも、長い間そこに居たかがごとく同化してしまう。

一連の写真展「地球の笑顔」の作品の中に、 正しくそんな関口照生自身が投影されている。
旅の最中に自然体で撮影したドキュメントからは、
豊かな自然に包まれて穏やかな日溜まりの中で撮影した一枚も、
危険が迫っているような厳しい撮影条件が窺える写真の中からも、
関口が切り取ったフレーム越しに、全く変わらない心のスタンスが伝わってくる。

プリミティブな環境の中で暮らす人々との出会いに、えもいえぬ幸せを実感し、
豊かな日々の過ごし方とは何かを自らに問いかけ、今もそれを模索している。
写真家として、撮ることが”生きる”ということを見直す機会に触れることであると考え、
新たな視点のドキュメンタリーを試行している。
そして、その作品を観てくださった方々と、
”生きる”ということについて共に語ることができれたらと願っている。

At the Photo Exhibition

Teruo Sekiguchi has an extraordinary presence.
He is a photographer, commentator, and political advisor.
His associations range across the cultural, art, entertainment, economic, and political fields, even the royal family.
He also spends quite a lot of time with young artists and students.
Mr. Sekiguchi talks about his work or hobbies with the same intensity.
His presence can be compared with the atmosphere of any of his relationships, which blows a pleasant breeze.

His journeys are the origin of his interest in people.
He began traveling in his 20’s and continues today into his mid-60’s.
He has been to big cities like Paris, London and New York as well as resorts in the south occasionally, but he also enjoys taking some very dangerous journeys to the frozen Arctic Circle, China’s vast frontiers, the Sahara, jungles, and camping out for over a month.
He assimilates fully into any place he’s in for an extended period of time, whether in the remotest of locations or the bustling cities of foreign nations.

Mr. Sekiguchi’s “Smiling Earth” exhibit is a perfect representation of himself.
Each one of his photos documenting true nature during his journeys conveys the quiet sunny locations within a rich natural environment, as well as the severe photo conditions in risky situations he found himself in constantly frame by frame from a spiritual perspective.

He is happy to encounter people in primitive environments, questioning himself about what exactly constitutes a rich way of life, seeking new documentary perspectives as a creator.
He hopes those viewing his works will talk about “life” with him.
